Customize PDF Page Numbers

Page numbers should be easy to find without covering the document. PdfVala lets you control the position, numbering format, size, color, starting value and first numbered page before downloading a new copy.
Add custom page numbers
- Open Add Page Numbers and select a PDF.
- Choose the position, format, size, color and starting values.
- Review the preview, process the file, and inspect the downloaded PDF.
Options available in PdfVala today

Choose a page-number position
- Bottom center is familiar for reports, manuals and assignments.
- Bottom right keeps numbering out of a centered footer.
- Top right can work for documents with crowded bottom margins.
- Left positions may fit layouts whose right edge already contains labels or signatures.
Check pages that already contain footer text, stamps or form fields. The tool uses a standard inset from the selected edge; it does not provide arbitrary x/y coordinates.
Start numbering after a cover page
Use Start Numbering From Page to choose which physical PDF page receives the first number. Then use the starting-number field to choose the number printed there. For example, begin on physical page 3 but display “1” to leave a cover and contents page unnumbered.
Use regular, total or Roman numbering
Regular numbers are best for most files. “Page 1 of 10” helps readers know the document length. Roman numerals are useful for front matter when the whole document uses that style. Prefix and suffix fields can produce labels such as “Appendix 1” or “Page 1 — Draft.”
Pick a readable size and color
A 10–12 pt number is a practical starting point for standard pages. Use a color with clear contrast against every page. Light gray may disappear on scans, while pure black can compete with an existing footer. The preview is an approximation, so check the final PDF at 100% zoom.
Current limitations
Privacy and safe editing
Numbering runs in the browser, without sending document contents to a PdfVala processing server. Always keep the original and review the output for overlap, especially on rotated pages, mixed page sizes, legal documents or files with existing headers and footers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I number the PDF from page 5 but start at number 1?
Yes. Set the first numbered physical page to 5 and set the starting displayed number to 1.
Can I place numbers at a completely custom location?
No. Choose one of six standard top/bottom and left/center/right positions.
Can I add “Page” before every number?
Yes. Enter “Page ” in the prefix field, including the trailing space. The page-of-total format already includes a label.
Will page numbers replace existing footer text?
No. They are drawn on top of the existing page. Choose a different position or adjust the size and color to avoid overlap.
